Project Details

Welcome to the teacher planning page. This page will lay out the CAN project and help you get started. The project has online components as well as class work. There are three parts to this project: inquiry, persuasive writing, and developing an action plan. The suggested time line for the project is four weeks.

CAN allows your students access to people working in the field they are studying. It goes beyond simply being a place to find static information. Instead, your students will be able to create a dialogue with community groups that are undergoing this important work. Our partners have agreed to be available for student interaction for two weeks. Because of the nature of this pilot, these groups will only be available during this time. Check the calendar below for specific dates.

Students can use the menu bar above to navigate to student pages. We have also linked student pages to corresponding teacher pages for your convenience.

This project is designed to meet the State of Michigan sixth grade social studies GLCE G6.1:
Global Topic Investigation and Issue Analysis: Contemporary Investigations – Conduct research on contemporary global topics and issues, compose persuasive essays, and develop a plan for action. (Find all the Michigan GLCEs at www.michigan.gov/mde.)
However, the activities are meant to be multi-level and open-ended. We hope you find them flexible enough to be useful in your classroom!

The project was developed in part to raise awareness about sustainable development, specifically as it relates to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals one and seven. To engage your students directly in learning about the MDGs, visit cyberschoolbus.un.org.
